Creating a Household Manual is easy! Simply set up a binder with dividers that will
represent specific categories that are meaningful for your life.
For instance, if you're a parent and often use a
babysitter, you will want to create a section called "Babysitter". Logically, it should contain emergency phone
numbers, but might also list the locations of different items in the house, i.e., flashlights, batteries, first aid kits,
etc. Or you might want to list the TV shows your child is allowed to watch or your child's favorite bedtime story.
The house sitter or pet sitter should also have a section in the Household Manual. After all, the pet sitter would need
to know where Fido's leash is, the name of his vet, or how many treats he's allowed to have each day. The house sitter
would benefit from knowing the location of the circuit breaker or instructions for operating the VCR.
But the Household Manual isn't just for other people. Most importantly, it's a go-to resource for you and your family.
Not only should emergency phone numbers be listed in the front section, but also detailed information that might be easy to
forget in an emergency situation. For example, a listing of all prescription medications for each member of the family
would be helpful, as well as a listing of each of the family's various physicians and the local hospitals.
Do you collect takeout menus from your favorite restaurants? Keep them in the "Dining" section of your Household Manual
for easy access!
Never know what to do with all of those business cards you collect? Store the pertinant ones in the Household
Manual, using plastic binder inserts designed for that purpose - they're available at your office supply stores. They can even be
organized by categore, i.e., home services, personal services, medical, auto, travel, entertainment, etc.
Perhaps an "Automobile" section would be in order. Each vehicle could be listed, noting its Vehicle Identification
Number, license plate number, and auto insurance policy number. While you're at it, why not create a list of all insurance
policies, i.e., health, life, auto, home, disability, etc.? Don't forget to list your insurance agents' names and phone
numbers too!
Always searching for the right gift? Perhaps a list of friends' and family's clothing sizes, hobbies, and room colors
would help! Special dates, such as anniversaries, could also be noted.
The key to a functional Household Manual is to create it to reflect your family's life and interests. Place it in an accessible,
central location so that it will be a handy resource for everyone. It's jsut another step towards a de-cluttered, less
stressful, and more productive life!
